I need to paint 2 old garage doors (home owners insurance is requiring us). The doors are in bad shape and we are planning to eventually replace them, just can't do it right now. So far I've scraped off the old paint. Can someone please advise me on what I need to do next? Do I need to sand the doors? What type of paint do I need to use? Any helpful hints? Thank you so much!

Sanding is up to you, but grab a palm sander if you have one and see how it goes. Prime any bare wood with a Zinsser Coverstain or a similiar oil based primer. If the doors were painted with latex before, then you are ready for topcoat of latex. Preferably Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore.

Get your hands on a good primer like this and prime the entire surface. It's designed specifically for your type of issue. Otherwise, any good paint store can provide an appropriate product.

If you have not already done so get a price on replacement door. A couple of years ago I had to paint and repair an 8' door to get ready to sell the house. The cost of a new one was only about double what I was spending on paint and parts including installation. I called a few local guys that do that kind of work. Also the price of the local guy installed was about the same as Lowes wanted just for the door.

Coverstain is a great product, just not for this situation (imo), You should use a slow drying oil primer,not a quick dry (coverstain) to let the product penetrate the wood fibers better.Duron makes a good one as do others.
