The wall in question is in a gym. It is approximately 20ft high. The area to be painted is about 15ft wide by 7ft high. This area has been marred
by equipment. The painter taped above the highest scrape. After painting and removing the tape, there is a visible line. Not a big deal, but to one who paints, I'd like to hear from anyone on whether this taping is a good idea. My thought was to roll into the area not marred without taping. Ideally, painting the entire wall would be preferred, but not practical. And by the way, he used a gloss paint over the original flat, so it is pretty obvious. Other than that, what would you have done.

If you try to feather a semi gloss paint into flat paint, it will look worse than the taped line that you currently see. In retrospect, he could have used the same flat paint and match as close as possible, but flat paint is not that durable, especially in a gym

The taping is not the issue. It is the sheen difference causing light to be reflected differently. The best solution is to paint the ENTIRE wall in semi-gloss.

Painter messed up, no way to meld in flat and semi gloss. Last couple of weeks I was reprinting part of a warehouse for habitat for humanity. Original baseboard orange, then dark blue to chest level, then 12" wide Orange stre, then white the rest of the 16' wall. Task was to make baseboard blue to match bottom, orange stripe to habitat green, clean up all of the rest of the white by painting over. Taped both sides of the orange stripe and painted green, came out great. Tried three different paint colors to match to baseboard to wall blue, no joy, ended painting both same way blue. As to the white, FIVE shots at matching the color with no joy. Close, but still visible....even though we matched paint type which was flat.......Solution was since it is a warehouse close is good enough

How much was he getting paid? And who paints a gym in flat? That was dumb. He did well to put it into a semi (as it should be) especially if the area is prone to being scuffed by equipment. Offer him more $ and paint the whole wall. Best guess is that he taped it knowing it was going to be "off" best he could do is make it straight. That's what I would've done if I was not in control of products used or the work scoped out on the work order. He just did his job.
