So yesterday started painting our garage that still has bare drywall. It’s the drywall that is very brown, not grey. Maybe it’s a different kind because of the environmental conditions, but anyway, it’s very absorbent paper. Went through a 5 gal bucket of Kilz 2, which seemed to cover it ok, but only got through about two thirds with the 5 gal. But now that I’m looking at it I might not have used the best sealer/primer. It looks like the PVA primers might cover this very absorbent paper better? It is only one coat to this point so I am seeing the faint difference of the drywall joints vs the darker areas of the non mudded drywall paper. Just wondering if I should go back over this, or if the SW Cashmere top coat will cover it fine with one coat. I only have 5 gal of top coat and only planned on doing one coat with that, and one primer coat. I need to get 2-3 gal more of the primer, planning to try the Kilz PVA for the rest of the garage to see if it will cover better, or should I stick with the Kilz 2 for consistency? Top coat is a med grey, and the Kilz primer is white.

PVA primers are the bottom of the barrel, Kilz2 isn't a whole lot better. Most latex primers are ok for priming bare drywall. You don't need to have complete coverage/hiding. As long as there aren't any water stains - latex primers are fine.

Ok, so then I’ll stick with the Kilz 2 as it didn’t do too bad all in all for trying to cover from a light brown paper to the pure white joints. I mean, I can see the separation of color with the one primer coat, but it’s not really noticeable. So the good SW top coat in grey should go fine with one heavy coat?

Just did this on 17+ yo brown drywall in my garage. One coat of Ben Moore Sureseal worked great. You could still see color difference between fresh mud and brown paper but no need to do second primer coat. Was thinking of Cashmere as I have used that throughout house but followed suggestion to use Ben Moore ScuffX. I used matte. That stuff is fantastic. Used 1/2” nap Wooster roller cover. One coat did a great job. Matte finish is beautiful and hides imperfections. I used Ben Moore Muresco on ceiling. One coat is ok. Would look better with two but it is only a garage.

Yeah, I finished up the edging last night with a 4" roller and it looks pretty good. The Kilz doesn't have a very good reputation, but gotta say, it came out much better than I thought it would. One primer coat will def do it. Now for a decent spring day (which are in short supply here in the northeast) to get the top coat on and project complete.

So got the garage all done this weekend. The SW Cashmere covered very well. One coat and no problem. My only real issue in the ceiling. Painted ceiling the same color as the walls, and the grey I used is a little on the dark side. Having the ceiling a med (weighing on the dark end of medium) grey kinda of makes it feel closed in. Is it worth the hassle of now going back and paining the ceiling a lighter color? Maybe not white, but a real light grey?

I spend a good bit of time out there. Planning to do some built-in shelves and have always used it as my work shop, car repair bay, etc. I just was out there last night, after sun down, and it just felt really closed in. I knew the grey would darken it up, so i plan to add some 4' LED shop lights. But still, just seems that the ceiling is too dark. If I color it, my wife says just a flat white is best, not trying to go with a lighter grey to make it two tone.

I've painted more ceilings than I could count, the vast majority of them were flat white. But there were a significant number that were a lighter shade of the wall color. Usually 1/2 or 1/4 formula. Will white paint have any issues covering the grey?

Well, that's the thing. Didn't want to spend a lot on ceiling paint, but don't want to do 3 coats either. Was thinking maybe the Behr Marquee flat white ceiling paint that they guarantee one coat over any color. I figure on 2 gallons, which would be around $80. Buy 3 gallons, hope to use 2 type of thing. And hope for 1 coat. The grey is fairly dark, but with 1/2" nap I think I can keep it heavy and consistent enough. Maybe also get away without taping, just cut in with my amateur skills, as they are 10' high and it is the garage after all.
