Hi Folks, I just repaired some joints in drywall and some of them have tiny holes in them.The joints are really smooth and look great except for the tiny holes.Do I need to redo the joints or is there a primer that will fill these sufficiently?Also I plan to paint the walls a medium grey with Sherwin Williams Duration.Do I need to tint the primer? Thanks for any help.

You should look for a primer with a higher solids content in it. Not sure where you are at, but I live in the Northwest as would use Rodda Paint's Scotseal.

It works great. As far as tinting the primer, you might as well. The paint stores will usually throw some tint into the primer if you request it and the closer the color to the finish color, the better.

The two "stain sealing" primers I have used have been pretty thick. (As in, I thought my arm was going to fall off when I stirred a fiver with a stick.) Those would be Zinsser CoverStain and SW PrepRite ProBlock Latex.

As far as tinting goes, you do not necessarily want the primer the same color as the topcoat. For pastels, sure, but for deep colors (especially greens and reds), you actually want the primer tinted to look like the end color would if you took a black-and-white photo of it. The reason for this is that many deep pigments hide poorly (unlike black and white pigment), and if you merely load the primer up on more color pigment, you have the same hide issues as with the paint itself. Grey hides the underlying color (where color-tinted primer would not), while being barely noticeable under the topcoat of paint.

My dime's worth, I would skim coat the pin holes with whatever compound you used to get where you are. Or you could sand a little bit more. As many times as I've tried it before, paint is not a filler.
