I've been asked to help my friend paint his new exterior door. It's from Lowe's and he told me it's fiberglass. However, it's not like any of the Thermatru fiberglass doors that I've painted. It's very smooth and glossly and looks more like plastic or vinyl than fiberglass.

First, is there some way of telling what the door is made of so I'll know what kind of paint to use?

Second, is there some paint that would work if we can't figure out if it's vinyl or fiberglass?

Supposedly the door is a Jeldwen slab that was prepped for Lowe's by ABS (American Builidng System). I went down to Lowe's to try and find out more information about it and they didn't know.... they said that they ordered a smooth fiberlgass door and didn't seem to understand that may not be what came.

thanks

For best results, consult the manufacturer, not Lowes
I went to Lowe's to get the manufacturer's instructions. That is where I learned it was a Jeld-Wen slab, milled by ABS. It's made for Lowe's and called Reliabilt.

The door itself came with no labels, tags, names, etc. So there is not telling excatly who made it or where it came from.

I went to the Jeld-Wen website to get information and couldn't find anything, probably since it's a Lowe's special door. I'm trying to get some phone number to call on Monday...

I cant' believe that you get a door with absolutely no instructions on painting or not painting it - nothing about caring for it etc. I guess you get what you pay for.
