I am wanting to spray paint an existing metal white garage door to a darker color. Starting to prep everything, what door, and tape around edges. Do I need to paint a primer on first? I know the exterior paint has a built-in primer in it but wanted to hear what others do?
Thanks

You shouldn't need a primer. The main thing is to make sure the metal is clean [including cleaner residue]

I will add an "if" to the previous responses.

On a steel door, you don't need a primer if you are painting over sound paint.
If the door is galvanized steel, and paint has flaked off, down to the zinc coating, then I would use a primer that specifically states that it is suitable for galvanized steel.
