To make a long story short... I've got a painter (he's one of the expensive but really good ones- not a cheapo or anything like that), but I decided I'd try to save myself a buck and paint the popcorn textured ceiling in one of my bedrooms by myself. The idiots at Home Depot who sold me the paint made it sound easy, and I've painted plenty before with great results, so I wasn't too worried about it.

So I rolled (yes rolled which I've now learned isn't so smart) one coat of paint onto the ceiling, and the result was a semi-disaster. The ceiling peeled off in some places (but not that bad), and in other (actually quite a few) places, the paint is now having a cracked as it's drying (and the paint looks like it could start peeling off at any second). My question is this: How bad have I screwed up the ceiling? If I call my painter and have him spray it will it turn out ok, or is the peeling going to need to be scraped off now? I'm asking here first because it's going to be fairly embarassing to have him come out and see what a poor job I did. Just want to get an idea of what he's gonna have to do to fix it. Hopefully he can just spray over my crappy job and it will be ok but I wanted to get your guys's opinions first. Thanks!

As you have found, there is not much you can do with a popcorn ceiling. Best to remove the popcorn, repair and finish the ceiling as appropriate, then paint.

I have the popcorn nearly gone in my house (two small bedrooms remain - the rest of the house as been completely remodeled). Getting rid of the popcorn and refinishing the ceilings has been one of the biggest improvements, IMHO.

I've been getting rid of the popcorn ceilings in my house
But only scraping the bumpy texture off, leaving a slight textured ceiling
The moisture from the paint can cause the popcorn to seperate from the ceiling
So far I haven't had that problem
I do have one ceiling that the pocorn was flaking off
So that ceiling will be totally scraped off

You need a total scrape off
Some have said that applying an oil based primer will prevent the popcorn texture from peeling
