This is a two-tiered question.

1. I am having a separate building built next to my house. Its siding will be hardieplank. I want to paint this hardieplank to look like stained cedar, ie. natural-looking. Is this possible?

2. My existing house has cedar siding. The cedar was painted sky blue 25 years ago, and is now quite faded and ugly. I think it's a shame that cedar got painted as opposed to stained. I want the house to also look like a natural-looking stained cedar. Stripping the paint is not an option. Is it possible to repaint the already faded blue painted cedar to look like natural stained cedar?

Assuming the answer is yes for both, would I use the same paint in both cases?

I'm a total paint noob so all help is greatly appreciated, including the basics of what would need to be primed, technique, specific colour suggestions, etc.

Just to reiterate, the goal here is to look as *natural* as possible. My house is in the trees in nature, and I love stained cedar cabins. If the end result for either 1 or 2 would be a fake-looking attempt at looking natural (I don't want a yellow house), then I'd be better off just painting the buildings green or brown.

Thanks!

Thanks all for your responses. Gymschu's answer sums up the situation I think. I guess I was looking for confirmation that it can be done, even if it wouldn't look that natural. So now I'm going to try a few samples to see if it looks natural *enough*.

If I end up successful, I'll post some pics!
