i need to paint the stringer of a set of custom stairs. it's essentially 2x (4x6) standard mill wood. Is there anything i need to do to seal the wood before painting? thanks
If it's bare wood (not previously painted/treated) you should prime if painting, although some paints have a primer with the paint and additional before hand painting, is not required. If the wood is exposed (visible) and the stairs were custom built, maybe a varnish or lacquer instead of paint? Either way, sounds like a fun project.
Primers and paint are two different things. Those who suggest they come in the same can are scamming you. You need a primer from a paint store to start this project.
And lacquer is not a casual product for the DIY person. Not sure why the poster was suggesting it for stair stringers.
What did the people that built this for you suggest you use?
