I have a slew of closets to paint, and some cabinet faces to redo, and a full 400 sq ft apartment...

I already have a compressor and hoses, and all that good stuff.

I'm trying to sort out if the better option is a HVLP gravity fed system is better, or a siphon system?

I've usually got a roomate or two, and I have an efficiency apartment, so there is usually some painting i'm putting off because of someone moving out somewhere...

Although right now all the projects I have are relatively small scale, in the future I might need to do larger scale projects, and what i'm reading is the siphon systems seem to be more scalable but the HVLP systems are easier / give better results?

I just know I'm tired of wasting money on rollers, and brushes that either don't last, or cost way to much to start with. There has to be a better way...

Thanks for any advice.

I'm thinking that efficiency apartments (especially occupied ones) and spray painting with ANY equipment is probably not a good idea. Unless you want everything (including the couch, TV, kitchen sink, etc.) all the same color.

Turbine hvlp is the most effective option with minimal overspay but the overhead of the machine probably isn't worth it for you.

Gravity fed harbor freight purple gun is the most cost effective if you have a decent compressor

While I have a good bit of spray equipment I rarely spray inside a finished home. The extra cover up needed along with clean up time normally negates any time savings. Also any conventional or HVLP won't put out enough volume to make spraying closets a viable option. A spray gun requires more CFM than most pneumatic tools do.

I'd brush/roll the closets. I'd remove the cabinet doors and drawers to spray them at a remote location and brush the rest.

A quality brush can last a long time if you clean and store it properly!

By the time you mask things off that you don't want painted (woodwork, doors, any windows, carpet, etc.) you could brush and roll a few closets. Anyway, spraying walls usually also includes back rolling so any time saved by firing up the compressor and spray gun, is lost in clean up. If you really are insistent on spraying, why not rent a quality unit at your local paintstore or tool rental store? They will give you a quick tutorial and rental is cheaper than buying a unit. Gives you a good chance to test out a unit and see if you really want to make the investment.
