I'm new to the forum and could use some opinions. I use to paint for extra money about fifteen years ago but haven't painted anything but trim recently. I am going to be painting fresh drywall on a new house. I'm in a small town and I only have access to lowes's and a Sherwin Williams store. Lowe's is much cheaper but Sherwin Williams does have 30% off right now. I plan on using a primer and then painting hopefully one or two coats. The colors will be a light shade of gray and a light shade of brown (tan) and nothing bold. What reccomendations or opinions do you have for paint and primer. I want good paint but nothing too expensive. I'm familiar with flat, satin, etc., but Sherwin Williams deviates with different names on their Cashmere paint. The Duration has flat and Satin. They also have something that says HGTV on it. Lowe's pretty much sells Olympic and Valspar. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's definitely a step above Satin.

If you want something with lower sheen, SuperPaint Satin or Velvet would do well for you. Not a big fan of flat paint on walls because they become "dirt catchers."

If you like flatter paint, then try a matte finish instead of flat or satin. It has less sheen than eggshell/satin, but a little more than flat, for a good compromise. Not all paints come in this finish. Duration does, although it's expensive. This is occasionally called "flat enamel" in some paint lines.

If you want flat paint, then with a good quality paint like Sherwin Williams SuperPaint or better, you won't necessarily need a primer either, since these paints are often self-priming on new drywall. There won't be any issues with flashing of more glossy paints.
