I live in Tennessee and bought some chairs and small tables for our uncovered patio thinking that I would stain them semi-transparent gray. Now, in looking at the options, I'm not sure that is a good idea.

Looking for advice on paint/stain options for long term wear/protection for pine chairs and tables. These chairs/tables will sit outside in the open all year.

Thank you for any advice. Greatly appreciated.

I find it hard to believe they'd sell untreated pine for exterior use. Are you sure it's not pressure treated? maybe another species?

Primer and paint will offer more protection than stain but may require more work when it's time to recoat.

In my area, we have hot, sunny and dry conditions most days, and fascia boards are exposed to the elements the most. Stained fascia boards are doing much, much better than primed and painted boards.
Would this apply to pine patio furniture? maybe.

Paint generally offers more protection and does a better job of sealing the wood than stain does BUT when stain fails it's a simple matter to recoat where as paint often requires scraping along with sanding if you wan to lessen the transition from sound to peeled paint.
