This patio has had no previous coating. It was rock salt finished and has lots of discoloration. Time for an update. Had some concrete painting pros over last year and they wanted $2000 and up for our 1000 s.f. pool patio. Plus they wanted to use very volatile chemicals to clean concrete. Could not guarantee surrounding plants/shrubs would survive.

So now it is a DIY project. Seems Sherwin Williams has a variety of products that might be fine. I read that staining old concrete will leave color variations in different areas. So, probably a paint will do.

I want to power wash and paint. No muriatic acid in between. Roller and paint brush, no sprayer. Earth tones are my choice and will add SharkGrip for slip resistance and gloss reduction.

Don't care if Martha Stewart gives me bad marks....just want something that looks good...not great. Will visit local SW dealer soon, but wanted to give them the impression I know something about this project.

Thank you.......

I use H & C concrete stain on bare concrete. I have it on my own patio and it is long-lasting in terms of horizontal surfaces. I re-coat every 4 years. Paint won't last as long and could be very slippery around a pool area. If it's really old concrete (more than 10 years) you can skip the acid wash and just do a thorough power wash before applying 2 coats of the H & C.

Gymschu......we are testing and probably buying H&C ColorTop water-based solid color concrete stain. 1150 s.f. calls for about 15 gallons for two coats. Am I doing the math OK? Not sure about SharkBite....did you use it ? I walked on our two coat test patch and it did not seem slippery. Thanks for your help.....

15 gallons seems on the high side. Concrete stain goes a long way especially on that second coat. Maybe buy 7 or 8 to see how it goes before diving in on the whole 15. I rarely use the shark bite, but when I have, it works very well to reduce any slipperiness (is that a word?). You are on the right track, Cedrus. Good luck with your project. Oh, on a final note, try to apply it when it's relatively cool outside or when that area is in the shade. The concrete stain dries fast and you don't want to be fighting with lap marks.

SWP is having a 40% off sale, 6/10 to 6/13. Can't miss that.... Not able to power wash and apply two coats before 6/13. Probably they will not take back any excess gallons I don't use... as it is a tint-to-order HC149 Siberian Haze. Guess I could ask.

Label says if surface is over 90 degrees....don't apply. Never thought about lap marks, thanks for the tip. Sounds like second coat is applied perpendicular to first coat.
