I am in the process of buidling a subwoofer for my room.

I want to paint it black, but am not really sure on how it will come out.

The box is made of MDF.

I am looking for a smooth shinny look

any help would be appreciated

thanks

I did a set of speakers I made out of OSB about 5 years ago. I used Bin for a primer just cause I had some on hand, but you could use a good oil based primer. I then used a Semi-Gloss black oil paint. They still look almost as good as the day I did them.

I do a lot of custom speakerbox work for cars, and we build the boxes from mdf, then put a thin layer of body filler or fiberglass over the entire outside of the box. then we sand and prep for paint, spray it, and clear coat it. depending on how well it's prepped, it should come out great.

I refinished a desk with a particle board top. I added a small amount of black colorant to Sherwin Williams sanding sealer (sort of an undercoater for varnish), applied the sanding sealer, then clear coated the top with varnish (but you could use polyurethane, or lacquer if you have the sprayer and talent). Smooth black finish.
