Been having smell problem with my shower. Often get the "cat" urine smell.

Tried cleaning the pipes to ride smell using old fashioned method (eg vinegar and bake soda) . . this didnt work so thought may be a P-Trap (or lack of Ptrap).

However when I opened drain there looks to be standing water in the drain.

So maybe not? Yes? No?

Any thoughts on how to target the problem?

Dump some water down the drain and see if the smell stops.
If not then most likly you have a leaking drain under the tub.
Any access under it to see it?

Hello

When the water has run (eg after shower) The smell goes away for a little while. Same when you do a vinegar/soda flush with boiling water.
This plus fact that construction is brand new makes me I think it's not a mold problem

BTW no cats and no access under shower

Even new work sometimes has problems-----so call the builder ,as suggested--or get someone else in,like a plumber to see what an experienced person would say-

Sewer gas is methane and has a distinct odor----what you are describing is not sewer gas--

Get a tub of plumbers putty and completely cover or otherwise block that drain----if the smell vanishes--then the smell is ,most likely, coming from the drain.
