Before I replaced all initially non grounded switches and older outlets, every one of these items was painted. Not just a little paint, but entirely painted over.

My question is, what purpose does this serve and was this common at some time? Now to each their own as if that is what you want to do, go right ahead. I am merely curious about the logic behind this.

Lazy. Quicker than removing the cover and taping the device.

That is what I figured with all my switches and outlets. Unsurprisingly, there are people that voluntarily paint their outlets and switches, despite the fact the paint could easily enter the interior of the objects.
