Need some help on outdoor wiring. Currently have a typical suburb house with ext. outlet and a standard patio light with interior switch. There is a large pergola just outside on the deck and I would like to have lighting on it. two lights each on two separate/independant switches. questions: 1) can you mount a switch on the exterior, is there such an approved box with cover? 2) should I run it off the existing light and interior switch, if so, how..meaning how to get it indepedant? 3) or can I run it off the existing ext. outlet ie. by using an extension box since I'd like to keep that outlet there, and is there such a thing as a waterproof extension box? I doubt it...but I'm looking for answers...any help, much appreciated.....

Yes there are external electric boxes & switches

Canada has restrictions on how many/outlets/lights etc on a circuit
...maybe 12 ?

Where is the outside outlet box & how is it wired ?
Same question for interior light/switch

I think I'm good for # per circuit...I'd have to double check my diagrams though.

The outlet box is just outside the sliding patio door, below the light. the light switch is on the inside next to patio door. pretty standard. hope that answers the "where" question, if you were meaning something else then I'm not sure I understand the question. as for how it is wired....again, pretty standard suburban builder installation....so wiring is likely straightforward (again, not sure that answers your question, probably not).

I have not found the boxes/switches I need but then I just started my search.

On the outside wiring...
Sometimes the box is in the wall...sometimes its mounted on the siding
Sometimes the wire comes thru the wall
Other times thru conduit from below

Wall switch can have power in t he box
or it can be just a switch loop without a neutral in thebox
So there isn't really standard wiring.....there are different methods

Noted, thanks.

Location of box is mounted flush into the brick exterior wall. Typically no conduit for this but I have not inspected to verify. My guess is the wire just runs on the interior stud wall per usual and then to the box, so no conduit. This is why I was thinking of an extension box to get it outside of the brick and then run conduit from there to my additional applications.

As for the switch, I have not opened it up yet to inspect. The switch is the lesser of my preferred options. If I can leave that as is, in tact, that would be good. Hope I can source my power of the outlet box. we'll see....I have to do some more investigation...
