Outdoor Tile

778 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  JazMan
I laid 12x24 tile 2 weeks ago, outdoors, and directly to concrete. I thought 3 days of drying would be sufficient, but it rained after the third day. Since then we have had 2-3 days of sun, and then 1-2 days of rain, consistently since then. Two weeks later a lot of the tiles are “squishy and spongy” when you press on them. With enough warm days and no rain, will the adhesive eventually harden, or am I out of luck, and need to pull everything up?

Hmmm...You might be hosed if it isn't cured by now. No harm in waiting for another day or two of direct sun, but if it hasn't cured yet...you are probably facing a re-do.
Sounds awfully strange to me.....What thinset did you use.
Try not to walk on the tiles.
Are the tiles lifting at all?
Can you move the tiles?
The OP must have figured it out since he hasn't returned.

He didn't give very much info but, my guess is there was not enough thinset spread and the wrong trowel was used. Where there's voids, water will fill the space.

He said adhesive. Maybe he used adhesive meant for interior wall tiles instead of thinset.

Thinset is an adhesive. Mastic is the word we don't want to see. But who knows what he used.

From the symptoms, I also guess he was using mastic. Live and learn.
