Hello all,
First post. Hope this finds you all in good health.
I need a bit of assistance. I did a search but this problem seems too specific.
I replaced the malfunctioning motion sensor on the front of my house with a new unit that ALSO has 2 floodlight receptacles on it. The old sensor was just that, a sensor only, that controlled the 3 wall lights attached to the front of my home above the garage doors. I had intended to only replace the motion sensor with a new unit but liked the added security/visibility of the floods. This whole circuit is controlled by a standard indoor switch near the front door.
The old sensor had 3 wires coming out of it: Black, White and Red. The electrical box that it was attached to has 2 sets of 3-wire cables coming into it. Both whites are connected together. One black wire went to the black wire on the old sensor and the other black went to the red wire on the sensor. The white wires of course went to the white wire on the sensor. Connected this way, the sensor would control the 3 wall lights perfectly.
The new fixture does not have a red wire, only black and white (it does have a green as well but I know this is ground). I connected the two blacks in the box together and connected them to the black wire in the new fixture, then the white to the whites.
The fixture works fine and the motion sensor turns on the two floods, but the 3 wall lights stay on as long as the indoor switch is on. I intended for the motion sensor to control all 5 lights (the 3 wall lights are 4 watt LEDs so the current draw shouldn't be a problem).
I'm pretty sure the wiring to the two floodlights are messing me up here. Is there a way for me to rewire the fixture/floods so that the motion sensor controls all the lights at the same time? A wiring diagram would help tremendously!
Thanks for any help in advance.
