What is the notch, indentation, for on the oscillating saw blade?

Is it just to identify quickly a different width?

Well, the notch on the end of the blade are teeth. The notches on the round part are for various saw designs. The offset is to allow reverse cutting. Which one.

Do you mean why is one the blade on the right skinnier than the one on the left?

Maybe you can get in tighter spots with the one on the right. Maybe the one on the left is a little stiffer. I would use them interchangeably.

It is so the operator can get into tight spots to saw around things, without interference from the thing in the way.

With the notch you can cut all the way behind a 1" pipe. or bolt or what have you.

And for further info, the hilt (or where the two metal pieces are welded) is 1 1/2" deep.
