Hi!

I'm getting ready to install an Aprilaire 700 Humidifier on my Lennox ML 193 Furnace. When reading the installation instructions, it shows the 'typical' installation is mounting the humidifier on the face of the cooling coils. Basically, when you cut the hole, you should see the face of all the coils and not the triangle space of it.

I was wondering why this is, and if you had to. I'm also wondering how you know the orientation of the coil before you start cutting. I'm about 99% sure that it will be installed opposite of where the coil drains and the coolant enters. So, for example...

---Coolant --  |   /  \   | <- install here
---Drain ----- | / coil \ | <- humidifier
               |/        \|

Am I correct in my basic example?

Yep, thats the usual orientation.

To me, furnace mount humidifiers are a wast of time and money, but maybe other people actually service them every week. I have had the best results with a floor console like sears sells.

The drain on all the coils I have ever seen is at the front of the coil and that is where the triangle plate is and that blocks airflow thru the humidiifer. Most coils also have the coolant lines entering there so I think your pic is slightly wrong. CAREFULLY, VERY CAREFULLY drill a 1/4" hole until it JUST perforates the metal. Then poke around with a nail or thin screwdriver and if you hit nothing then enlarge the hole and look inside and then patch it with metal or silver foil duct tape if you got the wrong side

General 1042 bypass humidifier is what I have, built like a tank and I have not had to clean it or change the pad in 8 yrs as my water supply is clean and house is clean and I change my filters. Almost bombproof unit.:thumbsup:

I took a look around tonight, and I see a good spot, but it's above the coils. I believe that this is a preferred spot, so you don't even mess with them and you get the most humid air into the system.

Is this acceptable? Can I not even worry about messing around with figuring out the orientation of the coil?
