I'm not sure whether this question belongs in the Carpentry or home Building Group. Please advise if I'm in the wrong area. I have a cantilever Deck with rotten beams. The beans go into the Second Story which is constructed of engineered I beams. What are my options for rebuild on this job? would it be best to pull up the floor to get access to where the beams hooking to the floor joist and remove them whole and then replace? Also is there a kind of Trek 2 x 12 I can use instead of wood that won't rot in the future? Thank you.

It might be easier to remove the ceiling below rather than the floor above. A rule of thumb is twice as much inside as the cantilever is outside. For example, a 4 foot cantilever uses 12 foot joists with 4 feet outside and 8 feet inside. Treated lumber will last a long time. I am not familiar with composite structural members but if they exist someone will add information. You can use Azek or other plastic or composite decking. Make sure you get the flashing detail right at the house. Plan for your railing so you have attachment points.

The question is, where does the rot stop, nothing there to stop water so joists inside and the beam over the door may be in trouble . The original plan would have called for a solid surface deck to protect the framing.

I would think the ceiling of the a garage would be easier for a look see inside. I would not rebuild any part of this with out a permit.
