I was pricing a 40' x 50' metal building with pricing coming in over my budget. I like the open span that metal provides. I think I would like to go with a wood structure instead about a 35' x 35', but how do I safely span 35' and use the second floor for storage. Do I use some type of plywood I beam or is this possible?

You would need to hire someone for this size building with your experience.

Discussion including specific sizing of structural elements is grossly premature. The OPS did not indicate what code if any applies, what he is storing up there (could be gold bullion for all we know), and the geometry of the building. From the sounds of it, he is talking conceptually, so conceptual replies would appear to be in order.

No, you could do it. Use 9 5/8 x 32" Glu lam beams as your floor joists on 12" centers

:huh:It's unfortunate that your ability to conceptualize does not extend to the realms of humor, irony and sarcasm, without the involvement of emoticoms:icon_rolleyes:

Get it? floor joists made out of 9 5/8" GLB's 32" deep, put on 12"OC. Does that seem like a financially and structurally reasonable answer, or is there more than a little sarcasm involved there?

Geez Louise, pocket protectors just suck the humor right out of you guys, you must be great fun at a party
