After dealing with difficult basement access for a few years, we decided to reverse our staircase so that we would eliminate a landing and right turn at the bottom. The original layout was preventing us from getting nearly any furniture downstairs, as well as any long building materials.

Now that we have the staircase reversed, and the hole walled off for a closet, my wife has been wanting me to put in a hall closet system. Here's what I've got so far, with my 1 1/2 year old's help.

This also involved some flooring repair, as the planks that were there were originally cut around the casing and base trim, causing gaps all around. I adjusted everything to go underneath the jambs. Deciding how to deal with the flooring delayed the project by quite a bit.

As the closet is over 34" deep from the back of the door jamb, I'm also working on a false back with hidden storage behind it. I used the front 24" of depth for the coat closet portion. I'm going to have a narrow door of some sort behind the coats and possibly drywall everything, and drywall over the door so it blends in.
