This problem just came up - outlet been working fine for 20 years. I have an open neutral on just the one outlet in my laundry room. I pulled the outlet out - just one black wire, one white wire and a ground. Changed out the outlet - no difference. My furnace also runs on this circuit and it's working fine - can't find anything else.

I checked voltage at the wires coming to the outlet - black to ground, I have 124 volts - white to ground, I have 17 volts.

Any suggestions?

Thank you,
ryan

Check the basic stuff first. If furnace is on that circuit, look for a junction box or other outlets. Check all wire nuts, maybe a neutral wire came loose somewhere at a terminal or wire nut. Just a suggestion.

are you 'sure' the furnace is on this SAME circuit? trip the circuit breaker and see if the furnace still works - an easy test.

if so, and you are certain your 'tester' is working(test in other outlets, too), then yes, you have a loose/lost neutral somewhere back to the panel... (or, is there a chance there is actually another outlet on this circuit, maybe behind the washer room?)

Problem has been solved! Loose white wire connection in the panel - screw had backed out so far in the bus, wasn't even making contact with the wire. Tightened it down - and the rest of them at the same time - and everything is in order.

Things are not usually this easy for me...but I'll take it!

Thanks, ryan
