I have a 4" square oak newel at the base of my interior stairwell. Recently the square trim cap came off. It had be glued and stapled with very fine staples at the factory and is composed of a center with laminated edges, solid oak.. I do not want to disturb the finish or corner molding on the underside of the cap or risk misalignment but I want to refasten the cap securely enough that if one of my boys swings around the post in future the cap will not come loose again. Does anyone have as suggested adhesive?or fastening technique. I had thought of drilling with a threaded double ended stud but if I split the cap it will be major work to replace the newel.
The cap is slightly pointed so if I glue it , it will be awkward to clamp as well.
