I replaced a switch in an electrical box with a modern switch. The box has 5 BX cables running into it. I don’t think I can get the new switch to fit comfortably.

I’m considering replacing it with 2 Ganged box 2.5” deep. Will it all fit or should I go three gang?

Thx

Think that's a 4x4x1.5 and the next size up is 4x4x2&1/8. The 4x4x2&1/8
would very likely do the trick.

Also, not all newer switches have the same the dimensions. Might
find one that takes up less space inside the box. Then again, if you
require spec grade, they're bigger to start with.

Thanks... I might go with a 4x4x2&1/2 if they have it. I hate jamming wires in a box.

Got a 4x4x1.25 extension.

I’m tiling over the box (cutting a 4x4 hole). Should the extension come flush with the tile or slightly recessed?

Can't say for sure where you are. Here in Canada the CEC requires that
boxes be recessed no more than 6mm (~1/8") when the surrounding
material is non-combustible.
Of course the supply houses all sell boxes of extra long 6-32's/8-32's and
someone's buying them. -)

EDIT: Just re-read the question and think I may have misunderstood.
In this case it's the plaster ring that should end up 1/8" back from
the face of the tile.

The face of the mud ring should be flush with the finished wall.
