Our kitchen sink garbage disposal is turned on and off via a toggle switch, which is mounted next to the cabinet door under the sink. The single cable that goes to the switch box disappears into an inaccessible area behind the cabinet, and the cable that feeds the disposal does the same thing, so I can't see what happens to those cables after they disappear back there (there is no visible receptacle, so it's probably hardwired).
The cable coming into the switch has two wires, black and white. What I find odd is that, when the disposal is off, it's the white wire that is energized, and the black is not. There is no black tape or marking on the white wire. Is this a switch loop, and is that unusual for a disposal? Is the right thing to do to put a piece of black tape on the white wire to indicate it's hot? Thanks.
