Neal, look at the pictures in post #7. The siding was never cut back to accept the full window to it's normal depth. It should never be protruding like that. Pictures of further back and at an angle may prove beneficial.

window with built in J channel. I don't like them but I think that is what we have.

From the OPs pictures that, close it is really hard to see just how things, I don't care for windows with built in J. To many different thicknesses of siding to deal with, and are mainly for vinyl siding which I don't use.

Never seen them. Could be considering the pictures you provided. I wouldn't like them either.

No chance for the flashing over the top. so all the water from the top channel runs down the sides with out a kick out some goes behind the siding. Not bad if the window was installed with a pan, but this one isn't.
And you can be sure every window in the house is just like this one.
