A gate is the last type of valve I'd suggest. The stem may leak, over time they do not shut off.

Noisy solenoid valve on Aprilaire 560 Humidifier
My model 560 humidifier is plumbed as follows: faucet-like shut-off at cold water wipe, 1/4 inch copper tubing to the solenoid valve. The water flowing through the gives off a high pitch sound that carries through the house. I'd like to replace the shut off with a gate valve and "fix" the solenoid. Any recommendations?
