I hope this isn't a dumb question: when we run water (sink, toilet refill after flush or tub before pulling up the knob for the shower) the sound of the water running is very loud, like wake me up from a sleep loud. As soon as the water is going from the tub to the shower head the noise all but disappears, almost as quiet as when the water stops when the faucet is off or the toilet finishes filling.

Any thoughts/suggestions?

Could be as simple as a loose pipe, fill valve on toilet, or pressure reducing valve issue. Have to investigate a little more.

Have someone go downstairs and try to pinpoint exactly where the noise is coming from when someone runs the fixtures in question.
