Means its been pressed 3 times. And it has failed to ignite 3 times.
Its in a lock out state.
To prevent a bad ignition from doing damage to a tech or your house.

To test everything right. You need some tools, one of which would be an insulated screw driver.
So that you don't get hit with between 10,000, and 14,000 volts, from the ignition transformer.

Then you will need a part or 2 to check some other things, to see if they are bad.

Such as nozzle, oil pump strainer, oil filter cartridge.
Unless you happen to have a pump manifold kit.

So you might find it better to call a service tech.

Or, you should go out and get these parts before proceeding further.

maybe i didn't explain myself correctly. furnace shut off on overload last night.I just cleaned it this fall was working fine until last night. I replaced the intermitent ignition control and it kicked right on. this was done after posting this thread. system seems to be running okay at this time. I am now wondering what happened to cause problem, before I buy a brand new ignition control. The one I used was one that I had in my garage

The newer ones go into a lock out. If they have 3 ignition/flam failures.
With out the the failure being erased.

So it had a flame failure last night.
It had 2 other ones, sometime in the past before last night.
Could have been from last year, doesn't matter.

The reset button on the one you removed, must be held in for 45 seconds, to clear the lock out.
