Hi, I have a 2nd floor apt. This 2 storey building is 100 year old, and got renovated maybe 20 years ago.

I can see where the main water comes in the copper pipe from 1st floor bath to my 2nd flr the hotwater heater. However, there is no valve in the main water. Luckily there is hot water cut off from the hot water tank.

Most of the fixtures have cold/hot water valve individually: washer, sinks... However, the shower water supply does not have shut off valves (I have opened the wall behind the shower handles to see).

So, when I need to fix something on the shower fixture, how do I cut off cold water? I really have to go to 1st floor and maybe cut off the whole building?

Not my first time to see such a puzzle, thanks for your input.

If this is not your building, call the landlord.

Many plumbers have equipment to freeze a pipe temporarily if the water cannot be shut off. Maybe get a pro in to install a shutoff and you take over from there.

The water main entry is kinda stuck between the floor boards and a wall.

If I am going to ask a pro to add a shutoff valve, do I ask him to add the shutoff at the water main , or do I ask him to just add it in the shower cold water in?

thanks

Judging by your picture you don't want to stand to close to the frozen pipe while they are working on it, you'll thaw it out!:wink::wink:

I would have him add one that will turn off just your unit. If you replace the shower valve, get one with built in stops (shut-offs).

To cut off the water line for my unit probably would require a hole in the floor... as the cold water pipe splits before it comes up through my floor.

Why would they do that at the time?

Follow post #3 call the landlord and say to him could you send a maintenance man over to #XYZ apartment and show me where the main shut off valve is for the water. I am having a plumber in to do some updates.

Ayuh,... Probably to keep the Tenants from doin' their own plumbin' work....

Yer a Tenant, Not the Owner, 'n you have No right to be messin' with the buildin' infrastructure...
Atleast without Permission from the buildin' Owner...
