I'm wiring a very full junction box. The NM is tacked to the sill plate. I'm wondering if I need to add a runner for the NM coming out to be code compliant.
Any insight is appreciated.

If the NM is stapled within a foot you should be fine. You can staple it to the joist above the box if needed.

I know that you cannot span joist to joist with NM because of the danger that someone uses it to hang something on. that's the issue that I'm concerned with from a code compliance perspective.

I probably would have come across the joist and into the bottom of the box instead of the side, but I think you are OK.

You can add an extension ring on that junction box to accommodate the extra wires.

Once I started folding them in, there will be plenty of room. I just need to be systematic with the layering of wires.
The box is 42^3", the wires total 39.75; technically, I can fit one more conductor.

Really? I thought that was standard procedure. How would wiring be run otherwise? Can anybody enlighten?

That's what I thought Clutch was trying to avoid. Sure, you could hang your fur coat off that, but common sense would say not to.

He was referring to stapling cables to the bottom of the joists which is non- compliant.

Many codes and laws are to protect against lack of common sense.

I've got about 8" of free hanging wire between the jbox and the first tack on the sill plate that I'm dedicating as a hanging spot for my fur coat collection.
