Hello Friends,

I hope this is the appropriate place for this question.

I am in the process of replacing the siding on my 100 year old garage. The old siding is wood with no sheathing behind it. I am adding sheathing and then will do some kind of vinyl siding.

I am preparing to add the sheathing, using zip 7/16 panels. This would ordinarily be fairly straight forward but I have a deck that is complicating things. The deck butts up against the garage wall and the old siding is above and below the deck. There is enough space to get the 7/16 panels in the gap and if I need more room I can trim the deck back.

I would really like to avoid having to remove and reinstall the deck boards as much as possible.

Questions:

1. Do I need to add siding underneath the deck or can I somehow make this work without needing to add siding underneath the deck?

2. How should I flash this at the bottom to ensure that the Zip panels don't just soak up water.

Pictures attached. I know they aren't the best. I plan to get some better pictures later today.

With most saws, 1 1/2" is as close as you can get to a wall
I see, so you're saying that I would need to modify the saw to make that 1" cut on the deck?

Luckily I don't think I will need to cut the deck because I think the 7/16 zip will fit already but of course if it doesn't fit then that is what I will do.

I will use J channel above the deck but I will still have exposed zip panel below the deck. Surely that is going to get wet and cause the bottom half of the panel to sponge out. Am I wrong there?

How should I protect the zip that goes below the deck?

Vinyl siding is not water proof, that is what house wrap is for.
My understanding of zip is it is water proof and you don't need house wrap.

Does the zip system use a tape to seal joints, wrap the bottom with tape before you slip it in.

Got it. Yes that was my understanding too but on the edges it doesn't have that waterproof coating.

Yes. That was my initial thought but that seemed too easy. :biggrin2: I will definitely do this.

I do have a roll of aluminum flashing. Would it make sense to put that along the bottom part that will be under the deck and then seal the seam and bottom with the zip tape to give it added protection? Seems like it would be a good idea but just want to make sure I'm not making it worse somehow.

I would use the tape made for or by zip. You could always add tar paper, house wrap of sheet poly down there just taped to the zip above the bottom of the vinyl.

Will do. Already have some.

Good ideas. I really appreciate your input as always, Nealtw.

I think that pretty much clears things up for me on how to approach flashing here but if anything else has anything to add I'd love to hear it.
