If you maintain the filter the vent hose should only need to be cleaned a couple of times / year depending on use of course and the hose construction. With the length of ours and only 2 of us remaining in the house cleaning approx. every 3-4 years seems to be the schedule. Dryers aren't normally maintenance free.

How long is your vent and what is it made of? Also, does it run through an unheated space. With a properly functioning dryer filter there should only be a small amount of lint in the vent stream, but if it is overly long, not smooth or runs through a cold space what lint is present can fall out of the airstream and build up if not inspected.
