I assume these things scattered around the yard are indeed for underground sprinklers?

The house is been vacant for a while so I don’t know where any of the sprinkler heads are but there are 8 or so of these scattered around...

Thats a solenoid valve. It would turn on a zone of sprinkler heads (3 - 8 depending on type of head).

More commonly you would find a bigger plastic box with a manifold of two to six valves.

All valves have a way to manually actuate them on. If you can find a manufacturer's name or model number you can do a search for how to actuate them manually. Then, if the controller does not work, if you can turn on the water, you can see where the heads are.

If you are in an area that freezes, I hope they blew out the lines before they left.

Thanks - yeah odd that there’s not ONE or two larger boxes with multiple, yet these little individual ones, right?
