Hello everyone!

I will be moving into a brand new townhouse. I visited the site before they had any floorings done and the steps on the stairs caught my attention. As far as I know, I did not get any hardwood upgrade so everything will be carpeted that aren't tiled.

I'm assuming these steps will be covered in carpet.

My steps look a lot like this, but mine isn't stained.(just random pic from google)

I noticed there are a few of those dark circular spots on my steps, but they appear to be solid oak stairs right? If I remove the carpet, will it look too bare and unfinished even if I stain it? Or are these the kind of materials most builders use for stairs but cover them in carpet?


What do you guys think?

What I would like to do in the future is rip out all the carpet, install laminate flooring and stain the stairs to match the laminate flooring.

I see at least two things that would not pass a building inspection in my area.
The hand railing does not turn back to the wall.
And it's hard to see from the angle of the picture but it looks like the winder tread is not at least 6" wide at the narrowest point.
If those are just pine, OSB or plywood treads then going to get carpet.

Please concider some other type of flooring other then laminite.
Ever seen a new house ad braging about laminte floors through out?
Engineered, or prefinished hardwood will add valve to the home.

Im from Toronto, Ontario. When I walked on the steps they felt pretty solid. I didn't get to take too much pictures because I was overwhelmed of how much work was still needed when the closing date was originally suppose to be for this Thursday so was in a bit of a shock.

Would pine, OSB, or plywood look like the the 3rd picture I posted? That how it kinda looks from that angle if it were to be stained I think. I believe the "rise" didn't seem to be the same material as the "run" material, but I could just paint the "rise" white. The steps didn't look like plywood and was closer to the material as the threshold that's on top of the stairs.

I was considering hardwood flooring, but the townhouse is only 1386ft including the tandem garage. I'm not sure how much hardwood would increase the value as I don't see it's appropriate for that target market. I'll think about it though and maybe consult with a real estate before I make the decision to replace the flooring.

I just checked the other materials you mentioned. For sure it not plywood or OSB. It seems to be closer to pine. My only concern is the last 3 steps on the second picture I posted. I can't tell in the picture but it doesn't seem to have the grain on them like the rest of the steps.

The third picture looks like Red Oak.
Your landing tread at the top of the stairs on the unfinsihed stairs is also red oak. It's done that way since it will be left exposed when it get carpeted.
