Probably this is not a new idea and won't be that expensive in the long run. I am not sure if it's worth since a fresh water line lasts for decades.

Here is my idea.
-Dig for a new pipe (few feet deep)

-Run a 1-2 inches PVC from street to house
-Run Pex inside PVC pipe from street to house
-If Pex pipe got any issue in the future, then you can easily pull it out without do any more digging and replace it with a new one.

I have a dreadful feeling if I had to replace a fresh water pipe at my house b/c it's 1000 feet from the street. If it happened to me, then I would use this method. It might ease next owner when I sell it in the future :biggrin2:.

What do you guys think?

I did that for my house. Only thing is the length. With that distance, you may want to use a 1.5" or 2" pipe. I used a 4" PVC pipe and then pulled 2" Type-K copper pipe thru that one. I actually pulled it in short sections at a time. I also pulled a nylon pull rope in the pipe and left it. Distance I have is approx 180 feet. I did not use any pre-bent pieces. I used a long sweep radius to turn into the house. I buried my PVC about 8 feet down. As far down as the track how would reach that I rented. Be sure that you close off each end really well. I cut holes in a PVC cap. This will keep out any cold air, dirt, debris, vermin, and everything else.

I do not like to use any pvc, pex or any other plastic type pipe in my supply plumbing. In fact, we do not have any PVC or plastic for the waste side either.

Thank you guys for all the feedback.

Bondo - yes I might just be a bit paranoid :biggrin2:.

HandyAndyInNC - I think run a 3/4 pex through a 1.5-2" PVC underground is a good investment. I recently replaced a CPVC from street to house on a rental property. It was about 50 ft and the digging was a paint. I replaced it with copper and I didn't think about this idea. However, for all my future replacement, I will use Pex through PVC method. Tenants just don't have the patience to wait.

TarheelTerp - My house is septic tank so I don't have to worry about the 1000 ft. sewer distance. However, I know exactly what you're talking about. On one of my rental I got called so many time about the sewer got clog up because of an uneven PVC coupling gap, I bought the 100ft 5/8 snake machine rather than like pay $70 for each time to rent.

Out here every house gets a black plastic water pipe from the street, it comes in a 500 ft roll
Mostly 1" I think. I think the cities main line is the same material.

Some things:

Where would you even be able to get 1000' of PEX?
Do you think you can pull 1000' of PEX through the conduit?
Do you think you can push 1000' of PEX into the conduit?
What do you do if there's a break in the PEX 500' from the house? You pull 500' out—how do you get the other 500'?

ron45 - This property doesn't have a well but it can be done because there is a small pond/stream near by.

huesmann - you make a very good point about going to a conduit for 1000 ft. I don't know how difficult that would be. Home Depot does carry 3/4 in. x1000 ft. PEX-A pipe.

This is just an if scenario when something like this happened.

If it's not against the code in your area I would have a well drilling company give you a free estimate on the cost.

It will be all-around-cheaper for you.
My well is 25' from the house.
The only cost I have is water treatment and what little electric the submersible pump uses.

You need find a pressure drop chart for the pipe you are using and do some math. I would say ¾ is to small. I'm thinking 1¼-1½ for 1000' run. I would use PE pipe and direct bury. Brass compression couplers are available for splicing.
