New dog learning old tricks

Hello all! I'm Bill, and I'm trying to help a buddy of mine stop his house from collapsing into a pile of matchsticks from sheer neglect. Sad to say my DIY skills are not quite top of the line, so I'm hoping to learn a thing or two here before I suggest to him anything too dumb.
