New here.

In the process of a bathroom remodel and interested in the correct way to deal with this toilet flange?
I will be installing 1/4” backer board followed by a tile floor.
Any advice is appreciated and sorry if this is posted in the wrong area.

You need to replace it, but it shouldn't be a difficult task since you may have to replace subflooring as well. It looks to be i pretty bad shape, too.

Do these flanges break/separate fairly easily from the pipe or should heat be used?

It is difficult to tell what it is made of...cast iron, PVC. What type pipe is below it?

All cast iron. I think the house was built in the 70's

But if you're like me, and you don't want to deal with lead and oakum, you're gonna get a diamond cutting wheel for your angle grinder and cut off the flange, so you can install one of these:

They come in 3" and 4" dia, depending what the dia of your cast iron pipe is.

You need to do something with the subflooring too as mentioned, it looks dry rotted.

Pretty sure I watched that video when researching my own issue.

I couldn't find the type of flange they used, though, so I just went with the twist-n-set version.

How forgiving are the 3 screw/bolt flange inserts sealing wise? I will probably do more clean-up with my die grinder once I know where the seal will sit.

I would clean up as much scale as I could where the seal is gonna seat. I used an abrasive wheel like this:
