I installed a brand new Broan 791LED Bathroom Exhaust Fan in my master bath over the weekend to replace the old original fan. The new fan is rated at 100 CFM and 1.5 sones soundlevel. The issue I'm having is with the volume of the fan. The old fan was 50cfm/2.5 some and it was quieter then my new fan is. Can anyone give me some ideas as to why that is? Or what I can do to make it quieter?

(I hooked it up to the existing 4" duct from the old fan in the attic....

Something doesn't sound right, pun intended. All the fans I've put in the last few years have been quiet ones with ratings between 1-1.5 sones and you had to really listen to hear them running. I would do like Chuck suggested and make sure the blade spins free without touching anything. Also check everything else in the fan box to see if somethings not secured where it can vibrate. If it still continues to make noise, return it and get another.

Audio level readings can be subjective, unless it's to a recognized standard. (numbers can change significantly. Depending on distance and situation)

If it's a banging, vibrational noise, then it's either not sitting right or the blade is unbalanced.

If it's an air type noise, then there isn't much you're going to be able to do. Try disconnecting the vent temporarily to see if that changes the volume.

Cheers!
