I need help!!! we have just built a new 16x26 cedar deck on our house and we can not find the stain or sealer that we want. We want to preserve the look of the beautiful red cedar and we dont want it to turn gray. What brand should I buy to keep the cedar looking natural? Everything we have tried so far turnes it orange.....

Try the Armstrong-Clark Natural toners. It is a step above clear.

One thing that makes me want to ask the question. You said everything you tried so far on your new deck. How many products have you tried on your new deck and what products.

also, did you clean your deck of the tannin and protective waxes that come with the new woods? If you are coating over it, that could be the problem also.

Now that you have tried several sealers and stains you will have to remove those before you finish your deck. For future reference, use the scrap wood from your project as a sample boards.

If I can help further let me know. Send me some photos to [email protected]

Unfortunately to get a UV rating many clears have sort of an amber hugh to them. I would suggest looking into Sikkens SRD. The to tones you may be interested in are #078 and #996. Many Sikkens dealers will have sample cans for you to try out on a piece of cedar....

Application would be like the previous post. Sikkens reccommends a good sanding on the deck top to remove residue and mill glaze. This opens the poors of the wood for better product penetration.

Good Luck to you and your quest.....and remember if you buy a $20 can of stain that is exactly what you will get. For Sikkens products expect to pay $39 up for SRD which is a one coat finish. There is also Cetol Dek which is a 2 coat gloss finish in the $70 range. Cetol Dek makes a deck look as though its in interior hardwood floor, good stuff either way.
