hi... I'd like to float out a low spot in a shower surround (wall) that's been lined with cement board in anticipation of tiling. Contractor messed up and the wall was not flat. I've got a 3/8" low spot that extends out almost 2 feet across and the same up from the floor of the shower. Can I use thinset alone, or should I screw a piece of 1/4" hardi-board on and float around it.. or...???? any help would be appreciated. thank you!!!

I would remove the bad section--sister in a stud or two--then install the backer --

If you are really good with a trowel---you could fill the area by applying several layers of thinset---but thinset takes a while to set---so that could take you two or three days to complete.

trying to fill 3/8 on one pass ? Thinset shrinks--and sags--so that will not work--

Thanks for the reply.... decided to try floating out part of it with polymer additive used instead of water, and some poly fibers thrown in too.. so far so good. Will test to see how well is does.... at this point, tearing out the wall is really not an option.
