Buying carpet at Home Depot, replacing all carpet in home we are purchasing - owners had cats, we have cat allergies. Need to choose between:

Prime Comfort Foam Pad, .99/sqft, "double-sided moisture barrier that helps prevent growth of mold and bacterial growth under carpet."

Memory Foam Pad, .89/sqft, "Teflon surface protector is a breathable moisture barrier that helps prevent growth of mold and bacterial growth under carpet."

There is a .79 option that is recycled shoe material, not memory foam.

We have two children, no pets.

I've read that memory foam can ruin carpet over time as the foam gives in to your steps. I don't know what to believe.

I am no expert, but I don't think I would want the first (moisture barrier) pad.

Breathable (second pad) makes more sense.

If dry sub floor still smells, oil base primer would help.

No cat odor - just can't handle cat dander, so I'm going for full pad/carpet replacement.

You don't want foam pad. You want 1/2" 8-10 lb. rebond.

All foam pad flattens out over time.

Bonded Urethane: This carpet cushion is also called rebond and is the most popular type of carpet padding sold today. It is made from reclaimed scrap of high-density urethane foam used in furniture and automotive manufacturing, which is bonded together to form carpet cushion

This won't flatten out like regular foam pad.

Also check the floor to make sure there is no active urine.

Lightly wet the floor and see if the urine can be detected.
If not then your good to go.
If so, then you need to lightly sand the effected areas, lightly spray with vinegar, then seal it with a good sealer.


Then lay your flooring.

This is probably the most popular higher end pad. Pretty much every installer should have it.
