I have a tongue & groove stained breezeway/patio cover that is stained Dark Walnut on Southern Yellow Pine. Because of the yellow color of the pine ... the finished product is more of a American Walnut which is exactly what I was going for after testing several colors. Right amount of darkness but not too dark.

Any how, I am now building a 8 ft patio bar and was going to make the bar top out of 2 x 6 Southern Yellow Pine and stain it the same color as the ceiling. I ran across a sawmill and they have some nice 1 x 6 x 8 Red Cedar boards they are selling for $20 each. I can make those work for the bar top but just looking at it, a clear natural red cedar right now doesn't compliment the ceiling color. I was wondering if the red cedar can take maybe a lighter walnut or pecan shade of stain??? I've never worked with red cedar as far as staining and is the reason for the question.

Thanks,

Buy a board, cut it up into pieces, and test all the stains that you think will match.

When you find the one that suits you, get more and build to your hearts desire, then stain it.

I prefer to finish cedar with the finish that I used in high school, but have forgot what it was in 1972.

I made a chess board from cedar and walnut, and finished it and the squares are still RED and near BLACK in color, still after all these years.

Thanks ED ... Different stains can act differently based on the wood species. Just was checking if someone else had stained red cedar using a different color like walnut/pecan/chestnut, etc.

Yes I know, that is why I suggest that you do your own testing, that way you know what you want, and can do with what you have.

That is the only sure way that you will get the results you want the first time.

And afterward you will have samples to refer back to, when and if you decide to do this again in a different room, or home, or area.

Put some mineral spirits on the wood to preview what it will look like just clear coated.

I would maybe try a stain with some yellow oxide and black. (golden oak + ebony)

keep in mind there is no way to to get rid of the red without bleaching the wood first with a 2 part bleach.
