currently contemplating on adding a second floor to part of ranch house. should i look for a remodeling contractor or a construction contractor?

i have no experience in building industry. is it advisable to act as my own contractor and orchestrate to save some money (and have some headaches)?

any reputable companies that anyone knows of in Long Island region?

thanks

I would go with a new construction contractor. I would think they would know more about bearing walls and footings.

I would check first to see if the footings wold handle the added weight. Then deside what to do with the heating and cooling. One new unit for all of the home or add a unit for the second floor doubling the bi annual maintenance costs.

I prefer one new unit and zoning. You have to sntall everything else to make it work anyway..

I agree you need to find a contractor experienced in new additions and new home building, alot of remodelers don't have the necessary experience and expertise in this area. I do have a contact up there in the tile & stone arena and I'm sure he could hook you up with names of dependable and reputable builders on LI. If you'd like I could put you in touch with him, let me know.
