I know this a boring question:) We are in the process of painting the interior of our house and are having some issues with knots showing through the trim paint. Initially we used 2 coats of latex Kilz primer and 2 coats of white paint on bare wood. We painted it maybe two years ago, and it looks pretty bad. Want to do it over the right way and want to get everyone's recommendations.

My plan is to sand it down and re-caulk. Prime it with an oil based primer such as: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-1-gal-White-Flat-Cover-Stain-Primer-3551/202073000

Then we plan to paint it with a latex enamel from Sherwin Williams. http://www.sherwin-williams.com/pai...r-paint-coatings/paint-coatings/&N=1488370885

Appreciate the help,

Your plan will work.
You used the wrong brand primmer the first time.
Also cut out that old caulking and redo it.

Other advantage to the BIN, they both stink but the Bin dissipates quickly where the oil lingers. I think the BIN cleans up better with household ammonia than the oil does with mineral spirits.

Those are some nasty knots. I might do both if I really wanted the best shot at stopping future bleed. Hit the knots a couple times with a spray can of the Bin, then prime the whole thing with the oil.

Another trick I've used to stop pine knots from bleeding is to use wood glue. Smear a thin layer over the knots and let it dry, then paint as normal. A couple months ago I went back to an exterior job where is had done that a few years ago and none of the knots had bled back through.

The drawback is it's hard to make the glue spots blend in perfectly. They might shown as a slight hump.

or just shellac over, prime and paint. If buying the zinsser shellac, cut 50/50 or 2:1 alcohol to shellac. I recently did this on an old pine table that I refinished. I noticed the knots bleeding through 1-2-3, so I hit with a quick coat of shellac and the problem went away.
