Hi,

I have some rotted wood where the gutter is mounted to. I'm not sure how to proceed with the repairs and I was hoping that someone can assist with some recommendations with on to fix this issue.

From one of the images, the red arrow shows the rotted wood behind the gutter.

1. How do I remove the gutter from the wooded board? Is there is screw above the gutter that mounts it in place?

2. What is the best way to remove the rotted wood without causing any additional damages? Should I use a crowbar and carefully pry it off?

3. What size wood should the replacement be? Should I get pressure-treated wood and paint with a white exterior?

4. Should I cut a hole and install a downspout so water can go into the other gutter? Please refer to the GREEN arrow in the picture

It looks like your gutter is held up with spikes and ferrules. To remove them put the claw of a straight hammer or the short end of a flat bar under the top lip of the gutter so it is against the back of the spike head. Then drive that hammer/flat bar with another hammer until the spike is a little loose. Then you can get behind the head with the hammer or flat bar and use another hammer to drive the spike out. Remove the entire gutter. You might have to take the piece of wood out by using a cat's paw under the nail heads or by splitting it into pieces. It is your choice what to use to replace the wood.

Q: Is the top gutter capped on the valley end?
After you replace the damaged wood, get a gutter man to look at this.
I don't like the way this gutter is bringing the rain water to the valley end, causing such damage with the volume of water. I would definitely install a down spout on the wall side, but not exactly at the wall.

Thank you all for your reply and advice, I appreciate this.

In addition, I also have another corner of the home with rotted wood which I would like to fix. Please refer to the two images.

How do I remove this corner gutter?

Green arrows: Do I remove any sealant and the screws where the green arrows are pointed to?

Red arrow: Do I pull out these long nails to free the gutter from the facia board?

Purple arrow: I don't see any screws holding the downspout. Can I just use my hand and carefully pull it out? Or is there another way to do this?

Thank you!

My post above tells how to pull spikes without damaging the gutter. Take the screws out and take the corner apart. Get a strip miter piece for putting it back together.

Thanks for the advice on how to pull the spikes out without damaging the gutter, this is very helpful and I will follow the steps.

As for the corner, it currently does not have a miter piece in place. Can I just screw it back together and add a sealant? As for the sealant, can I use standard DAP 45-year caulk or do you recommend something else for aluminum gutters?
