Hello,
In efforts to modernize our home, we removed the upper cabinets between our kitchen and dining room. After we took out the cabinet, we discovered they had made a special cabinet part to make a box around a large silver vent pipe. To stop air leaks, we cut the box off from the rest of the cabinet as a temporary fix, but we really need to make a frame around this area, and then rock it. I have some experience taping and mudding. Any suggestions would be great!

Was the vent duct part of the kitchen exhaust over the range? Normally, just frame a ladder type member and hang it from the joists or trusses above with 2x4's. I don't understand why it would be there, unless as mentioned. Be safe, GBAR
